Easter Egger
Overview
Easter Eggers are the wild cards of the backyard flock — each one is genetically unique, laying eggs in shades of blue, green, olive, or even pink. They're not technically a recognized breed but rather mixed-breed chickens carrying the blue-egg gene from Araucana or Ameraucana ancestry. This genetic variety means every Easter Egger looks different too, with a wide range of feather colors and patterns.
What makes Easter Eggers so popular is the daily surprise in the nesting box. Each hen lays one consistent color throughout her life, but since every hen is different, a flock of Easter Eggers produces a gorgeous rainbow egg basket. They're solid layers at around 200 eggs per year, and their friendly, curious personalities make them great backyard companions.
Easter Eggers are hardy, adaptable birds that do well in most climates. They're often recommended as a must-have addition to any backyard flock, even if just for one or two birds to add color variety to your egg collection. They're widely available at feed stores and hatcheries, usually at a lower price than pure breeds.
