Overview

The Brahma is the gentle giant of the chicken world — roosters can reach 12+ lbs and hens 10 lbs, making them one of the largest chicken breeds. Originally developed from birds imported from China, they were the primary meat bird in America from the 1850s to 1930s. Their feathered feet and legs, combined with their massive size and calm demeanor, give them a regal, almost prehistoric appearance.

Despite their intimidating size, Brahmas are among the gentlest chickens you can keep. They're calm, slow-moving birds that rarely cause problems in a flock and are easy to handle despite their bulk. They're excellent cold-weather birds thanks to their dense feathering and small pea combs, and they have an unusual trait of laying best during the cooler months (October through May) when other breeds slow down.

Brahmas aren't record-breaking layers at 150 eggs per year, but their winter-laying pattern means you get eggs when other hens are taking a break. They're wonderful conversation starters — visitors are always amazed by their size. If you have the space and want a calm, impressive bird that produces eggs through the cold months, the Brahma is a magnificent choice.

Pros

  • Impressively large and majestic — a real conversation starter
  • Extremely gentle despite their size, easy to handle
  • Excellent winter layers when most other breeds stop producing
  • Dense feathering and pea comb make them very cold hardy
  • Feathered feet give them a unique, regal appearance

Cons

  • Lower egg production at only 150 eggs per year
  • Need more space than standard breeds due to their large size
  • Feathered feet can get muddy and need occasional cleaning
  • Slow to mature — may not start laying until 7-8 months old
  • Not suited for hot climates due to heavy feathering and body mass
